Don't Panic

by Dean Lombard

/

about

When someone tells you not to panic, usually two things are true: there's something happening worth panicking about; and panicking will limit your ability to deal to with it well. There's a tension between those two things – and that's what I tried to convey in this song, working in my room with unfamiliar instruments while a global pandemic was settling in and police were out arresting people for being outside without a good enough reason.

Thanks to the West Song songwriting collective for the theme of 'panic', and the Darebin Songwriters' Guild songwriting workshop crew for the challenge of writing a song on an instrument I don't normally play. I enjoyed doing this so much, I don't think this is my last synth-based song.

lyrics

LYRICS
Everything is falling down
Everyone is walking round
Everything has gone away
Everything has changed

The eyes are everywhere
Frightened neighbours, bold crusaders
Cops with clubs and guns and tasers
Parliament has closed right down
Anocracy’s the new game in town

But don’t panic

The pathogen is everywhere
It’s on the doorknob, on the table
Underfoot and in the air
Keep your distance, stay away from friends and strangers
Don’t resist us, you don’t understand the danger

But don’t panic
