The Lucky Ones (demo)

from Demos From the End of the World by Dean Lombard

/

about

Inspired by my great friend and one-time musical collaborator Damaris Baker's story about her mother's experience in The Blitz, where a bomb exploded near their house but not close enough to kill them, unlike their friends down the street. It reminded me of how all of us are only here because our parents or grandparents managed to escape death each time it reared its head.

lyrics

We are the lucky ones, We are the lucky ones, We are the luckiest ones (x2)
We are the lucky ones

The children of the children of the houses that the bombs missed every time
The children of the drivers who were getting sleepy… but never crossed the line

We are the lucky ones, We are the lucky ones, We are the luckiest ones (x2)
We are the lucky ones

The children of the guys who got a sweet young girl to gaze into their eyes
The children of the girls who took a gamble with a young guy and had a living child

We are the luckiest ones

Every virus known to humankind, and then some
Floating in the very air we breathe, breathe it in
We know how manycigarettes it takes to kill you
Only one! But we never know which one; oh I never smoked that one

We are the luckiest ones

We are the lucky ones, We are the lucky ones, We are the luckiest ones (x2)
We are the lucky ones

The ones whose parents parents left their war-torn homes to find a better life
Who dodged tuberculosis flu and polio and somehow kept at least one kid alive

We are the luckiest ones
We are the luckiest ones
We are the lucky, we are the lucky we are the lucky ones
